The garden is all of that and so much more. Carved in the hillside are terraces for walking and viewing the varied plants. The tour of the garden is 45 minutes to one hour, but visitors generally stay after the guided tour and spend time just looking at the plants and listening to the birds. There are two fantasy gardens. A fairy’s village, between the roots of a huge tree we were forced to cut after Hurricane Ivan in 2003, is a teaching tool for student field trips. They use their imagination to write stories about life in the village. The other is a Dinosaur Era garden. This too is a teaching tool, used to teach about our impact on nature, make students aware about the endangered and extinct animals in Jamaica, and how the pet trade affects wildlife. The Aspen Art Museum is a non-collecting institution presenting the newest, most important evolutions in international contemporary art. In 1976, a City of Aspen vote led to the acquisition and development of an out-of-use building at 590 North Mill Street that became the Aspen Art Museum’s first home until 2014. Built in 1888, the Hunter Creek Power Plant first served the city’s silver mining operations while also enabling Aspen to be the first city west of the Mississippi to have streetlights powered by hydroelectric energy. This was the reality until 1924, when city support finally allowed for a professional director to take the helm. However, the financial hardships of the Great Depression soon hit, cutting off city funding and leaving the institute to once again depend on the dedication of volunteers from 1931 to 1945. During this era, the institute operated in borrowed spaces, serving as an art hub that offered classes and showcased the work of local artists. The collection was a delightful mix, featuring archaeological artifacts alongside both decorative and fine art, all donated by generous patrons. In 1937, the institute found a permanent home in a historic mansion. But fate dealt a harsh blow just four years later when a devastating fire ravaged the building and much of its treasured collection. This calamity threatened the very existence of the institute. Fast forward a quarter of a century and the museum has emerged as a cultural beacon, enriching lives in Northeast Ohio and beyond with its modern and contemporary art offerings. Its collection has gained national recognition, meticulously documented in published catalogues. Three acquisition endowments were established to ensure the collection continues to grow, and a substantially increased general endowment has provided more stable funding. This financial security has empowered the museum's staff to launch ambitious programs and exhibitions that resonate on a national, and even international, level. In 2007, as the museum celebrated its eighty-fifth anniversary, it underwent a remarkable transformation. The opening of the new John S. and James L.
